The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. This tournament will take place in the United Arab Emirates from October 3 to 20. Harmanpreet Kaur will captain the team, while Smriti Mandhana will serve as vice-captain. This event is a significant opportunity for India to secure their first Women’s T20 World Cup title.
The squad features a mix of experienced players and promising newcomers. Key players include opener Shafali Verma, all-rounder Deepti Sharma, and wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh. Additionally, Yastika Bhatia has been included as a wicket-keeper. However, her participation depends on fitness clearance. The team made one change from the recent Asia Cup campaign. Bhatia replaces Uma Chetry, who is now among the traveling reserves.
In the bowling department, a strong seam attack will lead the charge. This includes Renuka Thakur, Pooja Vastrakar, and Arundhati Reddy. The spin department will feature Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav. Moreover, Asha Sobhana, making her World Cup debut at age 33, adds depth to the squad. Shreyanka Patil’s inclusion also depends on her recovery from a finger injury.
India’s group stage matches will be against tough opponents. They will face defending champions Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. The campaign kicks off against New Zealand on October 4. Following that, a highly anticipated match against Pakistan is scheduled for October 6. Both matches will take place at the Dubai International Stadium.
Before the tournament, the Indian team will play two warm-up games. They will compete against South Africa and the West Indies. This preparation is crucial for building momentum and confidence.
